Not all of it. QuickBooks Desktop 2023 lost payroll, bank feeds, payments and security updates on May 31, 2026. QuickBooks Desktop 2024 has no announced end date, and Intuit says existing subscribers can keep renewing.
If you read that a 2024 cutoff was coming in May 2027, that date no longer applies. Intuit moved Desktop to continuous updates and stopped publishing an end date for 2024.
So the real question isn’t whether Desktop is going away. It’s which version you’re on, and whether your books have kept up since your bank feed stopped.
What changed, version by version
| Version | Status as of October 2026 | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop 2023 (Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus, Enterprise 23.0, Accountant 2023) | Discontinued after May 31, 2026 | Payroll, bank feeds, payments, live support and security updates have stopped |
| Desktop 2024 (Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus, Enterprise 24.0) | Supported, no announced end date | Intuit says existing subscribers can keep renewing and will keep getting updates |
| New Desktop Plus subscriptions | Not sold to new customers since 2024 | If your subscription lapses, you can’t buy Plus again as a new customer |
What stopped for Desktop 2023. Intuit’s discontinuation notice lists it plainly. Payroll taxes are no longer calculated and payroll subscriptions are deactivated. Bank downloads, online payments and transfers stop. Card and check payments can’t be processed inside QuickBooks. Live support ends, and Intuit says discontinued versions won’t receive critical security updates.
Why the 2024 date disappeared. Intuit’s release-process page, updated August 5, 2026, says Desktop Plus 2024 and Enterprise 24.0 were the last annual releases. Instead of a new version each year, updates now arrive inside the software. The page gives no end-of-support date.
Prices went up on October 1. Intuit raised renewal prices on Desktop Plus, Desktop Accountant and Desktop Payroll subscriptions renewing on or after October 1, 2026. Legacy Enhanced Payroll follows on December 1, 2026.
Which situation are you in?
| If you’re… | Your real risk | Your next step |
|---|---|---|
| Still on Desktop 2023 | Every month since May 31 has no bank feed, so those months are probably not entered or not reconciled | Decide where your books will live, then catch up the missing months before year-end |
| On Desktop 2024 and happy | Rising renewal prices, and no new Plus subscription if yours lapses | Stay put if it works. Keep your renewal active and your backups current |
| On Desktop 2024 but thinking of leaving | Moving mid-year splits your year into two sets of numbers that don’t reconcile | Pick a cutover date and bring your year-to-date numbers with you |
| Already moved off Desktop, books still behind | The new system started empty, so this year’s totals are incomplete | Load the missing months as an opening position |
If you’re on 2024 and nothing is broken, you don’t need to move this year. The urgent group is 2023 users, because the gap grows every month the bank feed stays off.
If you’re still on Desktop 2023: what to do this month
- Back up your company file today. Save a copy somewhere other than the computer QuickBooks runs on.
- Download your bank, card and payment-processor activity since May 31 as CSV files. Your bank’s website should still have it even though QuickBooks can’t pull it in. Get every month, with no gaps.
- Run payroll somewhere else now if you have employees. Desktop 2023 no longer calculates payroll taxes, so don’t rely on paychecks it produces.
- Choose where your books go next. You have three real options:
- Upgrade to Desktop 2024. Intuit allows this if you have an active 2022 or 2023 subscription.
- Move to QuickBooks Online or another subscription product.
- Move to a system you own outright, with no annual renewal.
- Pick a cutover date and catch up everything before it. Whatever you choose, the months since your bank feed stopped still have to be entered. Do that before year-end so your tax preparer gets one complete year, not a gap.
How LedgerLift helps
If you’re leaving Desktop for a system you own: Historical Summary Load, $297. We take the months you’re behind, summarize them by category and month, and load that as your opening position in your LedgerDesk system. Your year-to-date numbers are correct from day one, using the same category names your new entries use. Anything your statements don’t make clear stays flagged, not guessed. It includes one live working session to set your cutover date and walk through the loaded system.
It’s a flat price because the work is bounded. You provide complete months, digital exports (CSV, not PDFs or scans), one business with business accounts only, and everything at once. If your situation is different, reply before sending anything and we’ll sort out the right approach first.
The summary loads into a LedgerDesk system: LedgerDesk Solo ($197) or LedgerDesk Access ($147). Both are yours to keep, with no subscription.
If you’re staying on QuickBooks: take the free diagnostic first. It takes about two minutes and shows where your books actually stand, so you know whether you need a catch-up or just a cleaner monthly routine.
The Historical Summary Load is not tax advice. Anything that needs a tax decision is flagged for you and your tax preparer.
